The Fly of the Kooks.

Licensing complications meant that this special acoustic show had to be moved from the Apple store on Regent Street just a few hours before last nights performance. That didn't stop 300 excited XFM competition winners queuing around the block before packing into the basement of the tiny Fly Bar on New Oxford Street. The Kooks have been doing the rounds ahead of the release of their new album 'Konk' next week and tonight was an opportunity to try out some new songs on a small but devoted audience. As well as airing some new material, singer Luke Pritchard and guitarist Hugh Harris ran through a selection of old favorites, covers and even asked for requests. The catchy 'Ooh La' and 'Jackie Big Tits' from the first album went down well to kick the night off. However, the venue wasn't really suited to this type of gig and the acoustic guitars were not enough to keep the attention of everyone in the room. Even standing on a bench seat 20 metres away we could only just see the top of their heads because of the number of people jammed into the room. Only the front row would have had a decent view of their performance. This combined with a quiet PA system meant that the young crowd became distracted and talking became the loudest sound in the room. Not exactly the ideal setting for showcasing new album material. The Kooks will always have good songwriting on their side and when they reverted to the well known tracks they had the audience back immediately. This show still had some great moments and everyone joining in to sing along to 'Naive' and 'She Moves In Her Own Way' finished the set off nicely. The night ended without an encore, or much interest in one. I couldn't help but think that exclusive gigs should feel a bit more exclusive.
